New England Catch Shares Workshop
The New England Fisheries Management Council and the Fisheries Forum, in partnership with the Gulf of Maine Research Institute, co-sponsored a workshop on catch shares in October 2009.
The purpose of the workshop was to provide council members, staff and advisory panel chairs with a valuable educational opportunity to learn about catch shares management outside of the traditional regulatory process.
The workshop provided New England fishery managers with access to a wide variety of expertise from around the United States and abroad. Workshop attendees heard from people involved in the development and/or implementation of catch share programs.
Individuals representing the commercial fishing sector, government agencies, Council staff and the private sector from Alaska, New Zealand, British Columbia, California and the Pacific Northwest participated in interactive panels with New England council members and staff. The experts shared their first hand knowledge of the lessons learned including the real and potential costs, benefits, pitfalls and best practices.
