Caribbean Workshop: Exploring Tools for Improving Management of Data Poor Stocks

The Caribbean Fishery Management Council (CFMC) and the Fisheries Leadership & Sustainability Forum (Fisheries Forum) hosted an educational workshop on data collection and management for data-poor stocks in February 2011.

The purpose of the workshop was to provide decision-makers in the US Caribbean with an opportunity to explore the tools available for addressing data-poor stocks and to consider how the region can best move forward.

The workshop curriculum covered a large spectrum of information within the topic of data collection and managing data poor stocks, and provided fishery managers in the US Caribbean with access to a variety of expertise from around the United States and abroad. Workshop attendees learned about fisheries science and legislation, current data collection programs in the US Caribbean, domestic and international case studies and innovative approaches for managing data poor stocks. Participants had the opportunity to examine the applicability of the new approaches presented to the US Caribbean and begin formulating recommendations for how the region can progress toward improved data collection and management.
